Design an Educational Game

Historica

Overview

My video game is an action role-playing game which is a subgenre of video games that combines core elements from both the action game and role-playing genre. It will incorporate action-adventure game style playing, which include a mission system and role-playing game mechanics which is pivotal to the unit of learning presented.

Instructional Objective

Students will be able to:

●        List civilizations past and present through the game.

●        Learn through the game about others.

●        Reflect the time period, culture by using the game.

●        Differentiate artworks by period, style, method, and materials.

Object of the Game

The game goal is to reach the future or where the protagonist of the game is from. The players or students will enjoy the journey through the ages as they will strive to get their character to the end of the timeline. The future is a juxtaposition of elements of art from the modern present world plus the creations of the creator of the game of what future art may look like.

Design Details

The game is an open world style map with hidden areas of what the student will discover gradually next. It is going to be similar to a first shooter game where the view is what the character can see in 360 degrees format. Concurrent save fire pits are going to be available to keep progress safe. The player can roam around anywhere in the lands he discovered surrounded by the art of the era he just discovered.

Design Process

I am a gamer and designing an art game was a natural instinct. I researched my favorite games which are Horizon and God of war. The research was fruitful and I decided to use a similar idea in my concept. Adding the artistic touch to the game is what made it different and class worthy. If this could happen in the real world it would be a great success in classrooms as students will learn a lot about art history through the journey the game takes them through.
